  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 34 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk or cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black food coloring (gel preferred)
  • Chocolate sugar cones or mini waffle cones
  • Round cookies (Oreos or fudge-striped shortbread)
  • Melted chocolate (for sealing and dipping)
  • Halloween sprinkles, edible glitter, or colored sugar
  • Optional: Food-grade glitter, candy eyes, edible stars

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cupcake batter: Preheat oven and prepare cupcake batter according to cake mix instructions. Bake and let cool completely.
  2. Make the frosting: Beat together butter, powdered sugar, milk or cream, vanilla, and black food coloring until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Frost the cupcakes: Use a piping bag with a large star tip to pipe swirls of frosting on each cooled cupcake.
  4. Create the witch hats: Dip sugar cones in melted chocolate and press onto round cookies to form hats. Let set on parchment paper.
  5. Decorate the hats: Add sprinkles, edible glitter, or a frosting band around each hat for a magical touch.
  6. Assemble the cupcakes: Gently place the finished witch hat toppers on top of the frosted cupcakes.
  7. Chill and serve: Refrigerate briefly to set decorations. Serve and enjoy your spooky Halloween treats!

Notes

Store cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Refrigerate if needed, but allow to come to room temperature before serving. Add hat toppers just before serving to keep them crisp.
