A festive, creamy cheese ball shaped like a pumpkin — the perfect make-ahead appetizer for fall parties, Halloween, and Thanksgiving!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1/4 cup chopped roasted red peppers, scallions, or crumbled bacon
  • Crushed cheese puffs or shredded cheddar (for coating)
  • Bell pepper stem, pretzel stick, or broccoli stalk (for stem)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, shredded cheddar, chives, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix until smooth.
  2. Fold in any optional mix-ins like red peppers or bacon if using.
  3. Transfer the cheese mixture to plastic wrap and shape into a ball. Wrap tightly and refrigerate for 1–2 hours.
  4. Re-shape into a more rounded ball. Wrap again with fresh plastic wrap and tie kitchen twine around it in sections to create pumpkin ridges. Chill for another hour.
  5. Remove plastic wrap and twine. Insert the bell pepper stem or pretzel stick on top.
  6. Roll the cheese ball in crushed cheese puffs or shredded cheddar, gently pressing to adhere the coating.
  7. Decorate with parsley or sage leaves if desired. Serve with crackers, veggies, or breadsticks.

Notes

Make ahead and chill for up to 3–4 days before serving. Add the coating just before serving for best texture and color.
