Moist, rich banana bread swirled with chocolate, this cozy treat is a home-baked favorite for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 very ripe bananas
  • 1/3 cup melted butter or neutral oil
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 12 tbsp milk or cream (optional, for chocolate swirl)
  • Optional: chocolate chips, chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. Mash Bananas & Mix Wet Ingredients: Mash bananas in a bowl. Add melted butter, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla; whisk to combine.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Combine Wet & Dry: Fold dry ingredients into the wet mixture just until combined.
  5. Prepare Chocolate Batter: Set aside 1/3 of the batter. Stir in cocoa powder and milk or cream to create the chocolate swirl.
  6. Layer Batter: Pour half of the plain batter into the loaf pan. Add chocolate batter, then top with remaining plain batter.
  7. Create Swirl: Swirl with a knife in figure-8 motions for a marbled effect.
  8. Bake: Bake 50–60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in center comes out mostly clean.
  9. Cool: Cool in pan 10–15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Use very ripe bananas and don’t overmix the batter for a soft, moist texture. For a different twist, try using melted chocolate or Nutella instead of cocoa.
