Bloody Red Velvet Popcorn is a bold, crimson snack that blends the rich flavor of red velvet cake with the irresistible crunch of popcorn. Perfect for Halloween movie nights, Valentine’s surprises, or any time you want a sweet and dramatic treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup popcorn kernels (unpopped)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup light corn syrup
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons butter or coconut oil
  • ¼ cup buttermilk (or ¼ cup milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 1 teaspoon red gel food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup white or dark chocolate (melted, for drizzle)

Instructions

  1. Pop the popcorn using an air popper or stovetop method. Spread onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and remove unpopped kernels.
  2. In a saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, cocoa powder, butter, and buttermilk over medium heat. Stir until melted and bubbling.
  3. Add red gel food coloring and vanilla extract, then stir well.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda. The mixture will foam slightly.
  5. Quickly pour the mixture over the popcorn and gently toss to coat evenly.
  6. Preheat oven to 250°F (120°C). Bake popcorn for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
  7. Let popcorn cool completely, then drizzle with melted chocolate for a spooky finish.

Notes

Use gel food coloring for a bolder red hue. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5–7 days. Optional: decorate with spooky toppings like candy eyes.
